It looks like the next Mass Effect game will be rumored to run on Epic’s Unreal Engine. BioWare producer Brenon Holmes recently tweeted about a vacancy at the company for associate technical directorand the ideal candidate will have experience with Unreal Engine 4 and 5.
“Come join our team and work with us on the next Mass Effect game!” Holmes wrote. This does not categorically confirm that the new Mass Effect game will run on some form of Unreal Engine. However, journalist Jeff Grubb – who was among the first to report that the next Mass Effect will use the Unreal Engine – went on to say that this was indeed the case and that it was Unreal Engine 5 specifically.
In September, Grubb reported that BioWare was considering its options for development engines for the next Mass Effect game, with Unreal on the table. EA has its own game engine, Frostbite, but now it looks like the game will run on Epic’s engine. EA will pay Epic a licensing fee for this.
It would have been difficult to work with Frostbite for Mass Effect: Andromeda, so it’s no big surprise to learn that BioWare is potentially moving to Unreal Engine 5 for the next entry.
In related news, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition games ran on Unreal Engine 3, and BioWare chose to not use Unreal Engine 4 for re-releases.
BioWare’s Mac Walters explained that BioWare chose to stick with Unreal Engine 3 to preserve the “feel” of the original three games.
“One of the things we did early on, to kind of put it into context, was we actually talked to the folks at Epic and said, ‘What would it be like if we did it? brought into Unreal 4? “”, Did he declare. “And it became clear very quickly that this jump level was really going to fundamentally change what the trilogy was, how it felt, how it played.”
Very little is known about the next Mass Effect game, but BioWare recently celebrated N7 Day with some new artwork that teases the return of the Geth.
