Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022 kicked off with a bang when Tim Cook, CEO of Apple.inc, gave a keynote speech filled with major announcements. Later, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Division, talked about the latest in iOS16. Craig and his team also gave the latest dope on Apple Watch, the new Mac with M2 chip, iPad and more.
Here is the recap:
The M2 chip
The M2 chip is the successor to Apple’s revolutionary M1-Ultra chip, considered the world’s most powerful chip for a personal computer. The second-generation chip transformed the Mac lineup with its powerful performance and efficiency. Revolutionary System-on-Chip (SoC) architecture combines CPU, GPU, memory and more on a single chip, so everything runs much faster, while requiring much less power.

M2 incorporates the second generation enhanced 5 nanometer technology. Designed with over 20 billion transistors, the M2 chip has 25% more computing power than the M1. The chip’s 16-core neural engine is capable of performing up to 15.8 trillion operations per second to speed up machine learning tasks. The 24 GB of high-performance unified memory gives the CPU and GPU shared access to a larger memory pool, giving the processor 100 GB/s memory bandwidth, 50% more than its predecessor.
Next-gen 8-core processor on M2 is up to 18% faster than M1.
Since the latest model comes with a 10-core GPU, the M2 chip offers a big boost in graphics performance that’s up to 35% faster than the M1 – for everything from photo color correction to editing. 4K and 8K video editing.
New iOS 16
iOS 16 is the latest version of Apple’s operating system, with all-new customization features, deeper intelligence and more. Smart customization is the key word here, as new features include lock screen customization via APIs, customizable notifications, live activities API, and focus filter settings.

Apple also introduced Authentication Keys, a new login method that comes with end-to-end encryption. It also works on non-Apple devices.
The new update also comes with AI-driven smart features. Now you can easily remove the subject from an image or isolate the subject by removing the background. The option is available in Photos, Screenshot, Quick View, Safari and more.
Dictation is another feature added in this update. Now you can seamlessly switch between voice and touch to enter text. Instead of typing with the keyboard, you can type in the text field and insert quick typing suggestions. Dictation automatically punctuates text with commas, periods, and question marks as you speak. You can even insert emoji with your voice.
The home app has been redesigned from the ground up to improve efficiency and reliability. You can operate all smart home devices from the redesigned home tab. Multi-camera view puts smart home cameras front and center for easier control. The new Medications experience in the Health app helps you manage and track medications.
The search option provides richer search results that gather all information ranging from app content to general searches like business news, articles, movie tickets, etc. You can view large scrolling previews of their files in Quick Look by pressing the spacebar.
