Indian start-up achieves breakthrough in aero engine design with Digital Twin


This Indian DeepTech startup has recently made a breakthrough in the design of advanced aerodynamic engines for cruise missiles and large drones recognized by the DPIIT “Startup India” program. With a team of 35 engineers, including chief engineers with global OEM experience and expertise, talented PhDs and graduates from global universities, including IIT students, Paninian has embarked on this challenging journey of design and development of advanced aerodynamic engines, also known as Turbofan. For the first time ever in the Indian private sector, Paninian has successfully demonstrated the design and validation of a 4.5 KN turbojet engine which is being developed in a family of engines in the thrust range of 3 to 12 KN, as well as an AI-augmented digital twin. companions.

The other breakthrough involves the development of an AI-driven digital twin for legacy engine performance modeling and prognostics to support mission performance and life extension efforts of IAF aircraft. such as Jaguar, Sukhoi and Mirage 2000. This can now be used as a tool to study engine extension and greatly assists the IAF and the Military Airworthiness and Certification Center in their study of performance degradation. These Digital Twins needed for peak prognostics, engine health and performance monitoring were designed entirely from scratch in India by Indian engineers. Now India can extend engine life locally and accurately without resorting to foreign aid.

Dr. Gouda, former senior scientist and program director at DRDO, currently a technology advisor for Paninian, pointed out that such a digital twin can also be 3D printed to develop the future power requirements of cruise missiles and large UAVs for India as well as for exports. “With design/development centers in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Pune, I believe Paninian is quite well placed to attract the world’s best Indian engineering and manufacturing talent to join this exciting journey,” he added.

Paninian intends to develop and manufacture these complete engine families ranging from 3 to 12 KN in India using state-of-the-art 3D printing technology.

Founder Raghu Adla also said he was “tremendously grateful to many senior industry leaders from Lockheed Martin, GE, Rolls Royce, including senior leaders from DRDO, IAF, IIT and IISc research faculties who have supported this journey”. He also highlighted the need for the public sector to support these start-up efforts with grants and access to labs. He added that Paninian is looking for potential collaborations from public and private actors to help further scale up efforts to successfully bring this to end users as soon as possible.

Paninian is also participating in the upcoming Wargame organized by Insighteon Consulting, a pioneering aerospace and defense consulting firm, to identify barriers to indigenous aero-engine development in India, to be held in August 2022.
