Following these 5 tips can go a long way in extending the life of your vehicle’s engine.

The engine installed in your vehicle has been designed and manufactured to high tolerances and can do its job in a wide variety of environmental conditions. However, by following these 5 simple guidelines, you can dramatically extend the life of your vehicle’s engine.

Here are 5 tips from motus.cars, backed by Motus Toyota (formerly Imperial Select), to help you extend the life of your vehicle’s engine:

1. Warm up the engine gradually

When you start your car, let the engine idle for at least 30 seconds before starting. This gives all fluids such as oil and coolant time to reach all the places they need to be and warm up slightly.

For the first five to ten minutes of your trip, try to keep the engine speed as low as possible while the engine and transmission warm up to their optimum operating temperature.

2. Gradually stop

Reduce your speed and engine revolutions as you approach your destination, especially after sporty driving. This will allow things like the engine and brakes to cool slightly with the air flow from the moving vehicle.

When stopping, turbocharged vehicles should be allowed to idle for a few seconds before being completely turned off.

3. Reign in the towers

Running your car’s engine up to the red line in each gear will dramatically reduce engine life. Changing gears sooner and limiting the use of high revs will go a long way in extending engine life.

4. Regularly check your air filter

Make sure your air filter is checked and replaced at service intervals and more regularly if you regularly drive in dusty conditions. Your air filter is responsible for making sure that no harmful particles get into the engine, and it must be kept clean in order to do its job properly.

5. Check fluids regularly

Engine oil should be changed according to the manufacturer’s guidelines and more regularly if you are an enthusiastic driver who enjoys using all the performance their vehicle offers. Using the right oil is essential.

Checking that the engine oil and coolant levels are at the correct level at all times will ensure optimal cooling and lubrication of critical components.
