Honda 2Wheelers India begins production of engines for global markets at Gujarat plant, Auto News, ET Auto

About 50,000 engine units are slated for production in its first year and capacity will be increased according to market demand.


Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. started manufacturing global motors from its 4th factory in Vithalapur, Ahmedabad district, Gujarat.

Powering its 250cc (and above) class two-wheelers, the dedicated engine range is intended to meet demand in Thailand, the United States, Canada, Europe, Japan, Australia and the Gulf countries, among others, the company said in a press release.

About 50,000 engine units are slated for production in its first year and capacity will be increased according to market demand. With an investment of more than INR 135 crore, the company will manufacture Midsize Fun model engines from its factory in Gujarat for domestic and international markets, the statement added.

Atsushi Ogata, General Manager, President and CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd, said, “As demand for mobility increases globally, Honda envisions further expansion of its export footprint across the world. With the introduction of BSVI standards in India, we are moving closer to this vision. By building products that are on par with global manufacturing standards, this further expansion will enable HMSI to develop production capabilities to strengthen our manufacturing leadership in India, for the world.

Ichiro Shimokawa, Production Manager and Manager, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Lt ,. said, “With today’s global engine lineup, HMSI will take its current export capacity to new heights, both in terms of markets and global quality standards. As part of this expansion, we are introducing special processes at various stages of manufacturing, such as machining, engine assembly and advanced storage systems. Building capacity from the foundation of advanced technology and a highly skilled workforce will ensure optimum quality standards. Starting with almost 50,000 engine units in the first year, our goal is to continue to evolve based on market demand. “

With the introduction of automotive safety, emissions and performance standards, the new lineup will seamlessly integrate Honda’s export capacity with that of the global automotive industry.

The release says that encompassing all key aspects of engine production and assembly, the new infrastructure will meet today’s challenges using best practices and standardized technologies for the future, which will include :

Machining process: “Superfinishing by lapping process, digital quality management system for flawless precision, e-Daily work management system (e-DWM) for 100% traceability of parts and processes.”

Engine assembly process: Precision laser marking for the engine, 100% torque recording and advanced firing bench for engine testing, as well as an advanced parts storage system based on vertical carousels for use optimized space and 100% parts traceability.

Best-in-class technology: 100% database recording system of all critical quality parameters, multi-level inspections (for fault-free output) and smart connected machines (with the latest inspection technologies) associated with a particular emphasis on developing the skills of associates for increased efficiency.

The scooter is priced at INR 78,725 for Drum Alloy and INR 82,280 for the Disc variant (ex-showroom, Delhi).

“It is planned to launch a battery-sharing service for electric rickshaws (E-auto) from the first half of 2022 in Bengaluru, Karnataka and gradually expand its operations to other Indian cities,” said the communicated.
