Digital cooperation, the engine of economic recovery

Global cooperation in the field of digital economy can play an important role in economic recovery in the post-pandemic era. That’s the consensus that emerged at a forum themed on Beijing’s “two zones” and business globalization at the 9th China Inbound-Outbound Forum in Beijing on Sept. 2.

The forum, which is part of the China International Fair for Trade in Services from Aug. 31 to Sept. 5, was co-hosted by the Center for China and Globalization and the Office of the Beijing Two-Zone Leading Group.

“The world today has entered a perilous period,” said Yi Xiaozhun, former deputy director-general of the World Trade Organization and former vice minister of commerce. “In addition to the economic and trade crisis, it faces a global crisis in public health, food, energy, debt, refugees, climate change, the environment and the uncoupling of industrial chains.”

Yi stressed that governments should communicate and cooperate to overcome difficulties in a divided world.

Zhou Yanli, former vice president of the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, highlighted China’s efforts for digital economic development and said that China’s joining the Digital Economy Partnership Agreement in 2021 will help improve its cooperation with other countries.

Siddharth Chatterjee, UN Resident Coordinator in China, said, “Digital technologies are a powerful catalyst for development, enabling countries to accelerate economic growth and connect citizens to services and jobs.”

He, however, called for more international cooperation to reduce global digital divides, as it is “alarming and frankly unacceptable” that only 53.6% of the world’s population uses the internet, leaving an estimated 3.6 billion people without access.

German Ambassador to China Patricia Hildegard Flor insisted on exchanges at all levels of government, business research and civil society “if we are to face the challenges of our time”. Delegates reaffirmed that dialogue and cooperation are the foundations for all countries to deal with economic stagnation.
