Alpine reveals extent of Fernando Alonso’s engine problems

Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer has claimed the team will “deal with” Fernando Alonso’s engine problems, despite the Spaniard having used three in as many race weekends.

As has been the case for several years now, F1 teams are severely limited in the number of power unit components that can be used in a season.

In the case of the internal combustion engine [ICE]turbocharger [TC]generator – heat [MGU-H] and motor-generator set – kinetics [MGU-K]teams must complete the season using only three of each component.

After a number of problems already, Szafnauer has revealed that Alonso is already out of an ICE, meaning grid penalties will almost certainly follow later in the year.

After joking, “Don’t worry, it won’t be 23 out of 23,” Szafnauer explained: “One of those three is back in the pool.

“It was just a precautionary change for us to test some things on the dyno and everything worked fine so the engine will be used again.

“The other, unfortunately, where the water pump broke, although the water pump is not part of the ICE, you can change it, but when it broke, it overheated the ICE so there isn’t one left. We’re fine, we’ll manage.”

F1 cars are driven to the limit with very fine margins of error and an example of this comes with cooling.

In Australia, Alonso had looked set to secure an elevated grid spot, but after his crash in Q3 the Spaniard was relegated firmly to midfield which had not been factored into the set-up. of the cooling package.

“If he had been up front he wouldn’t have had any problems,” Szafnauer said.

“I think it’s the right thing to do. If you’re planning the DRS train and your cooling package is like this, you’re adding too much drag.

“So the right thing to do is to be competitive and if that happens [overheatring]lifting and coasting, but getting out is the right thing to do.”
