2023 Jeep Compass gets standard turbo engine and 4WD

A year after a series of styling revisions, interior upgrades and new technologies aimed at attracting more customers, the Jeep Compass returns for 2023 with major changes under the hood.

Forget the old, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-cylinder mill that produces 180 horsepower. Instead, you’ll find a new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine making 200 horsepower and 221 lb-ft. of torque. A nice improvement, certainly, but far from equaling the 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft. delivered by the similarly motivated Cherokee.

Jeep says Compass drivers can expect superior performance as well as high fuel economy. This remains to be seen since Natural Resources Canada has not yet released its official ratings.

The turbo engine is mated to an all-new eight-speed automatic transmission, shared with the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Gladiator, which replaces the existing six- and nine-speed units. It is of course uniquely calibrated in Trailhawk version for better off-road performance.

Another significant change for 2023 is that all Compass models now feature four-wheel drive. The base system is the fully automatic Jeep Active Drive 4×4. Meanwhile, the Compass Trailhawk is still the only one to use Jeep Active Drive Low with a two-speed transfer case and 20:1 crawl ratio. Either way, Selec-Terrain is available with a choice of drive modes.

Drivers will also notice improved handling thanks to a wider rear stabilizer bar and unique power steering system tuning. In other news, the wheel designs have been updated and range from 17 to 19 inches.

The 2023 Jeep Compass is available in five trim levels, including Sport, North, Altitude, Limited and Trailhawk, as well as a Special Edition Compass (RED) helping fund vital health programs around the world through a partnership with the campaign (RED). It should start hitting showrooms in early 2023. All that’s missing are pricing details.
