New Ford three-cylinder donor engine delivers more horsepower and torque than previous three-wheeled variants of the model


After much speculation about the engine of the new Morgan three-wheeler, we finally have an answer.

Much to the surprise of Morgan enthusiasts, the S&S V-twin engine has been replaced with a Ford unit – a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine already seen in that brand’s base Focus Ambiente model in Australia.

Priced at £41,995 (AU$78,361), the new Morgan Super 3 replaces the three-wheeler that was on sale for ten years between 2011 and 2021.

Although we advise against taking the Morgan on the beach, you can!

What’s different about the new Super 3?

One of the biggest changes is the Morgan’s engine, which has changed from a V layout to an inline three-cylinder layout but remains naturally aspirated.

This new powertrain produces 87kW of power at 6500rpm and maximum torque of 150Nm at 4500rpm.

This will allow the Morgan Super 3 to accelerate to 100 km/h in seven seconds and reach a top speed of 209 km/h.

The Morgan weighs just 635kg dry and uses a five-speed manual gearbox taken from the current Mazda MX-5.

Morgan says extensive development has gone into tuning the engine’s acoustic character to enhance its distinctive three-cylinder charm.

The exhaust was redirected under the car for the first time to prevent drivers from burning their legs when exiting the Super 3.

Most of the design is brand new to the Morgan Super 3 which is the first clean sheet design since the Aero 8 launched in 2000 according to the company. It’s also the biggest visual departure since 1962’s Plus Four Plus.

The Super 3 has a new face, as well as “side blade” diffuser plates that manage the incoming and exhaustive airflow through the radiators.

But these side blades are not only useful for airflow: they also allow many different configurations thanks to the universal fixings on the side blades which can adapt to panniers and exo racks.

The interior was designed with durability and resilience in mind. The interior itself is rated to IP64, which means the cabin is dust tight and protected from splashing water. This is effective even in built-in USB sockets.

For the first time, the Morgan Super 3 features all digital dials, while the start stop button retains its “missile launch” style button as on the last model.
